Baron Samedi is a Voodoo spirit with the power to awaken the dead. So when we were asked to create the advertising for a new energy drink that bears his name "Samedi", we thought we’d go to the deep south of America, get a Voodoo Priest to channel him and ask him to write the ads himself.
This blog documents our journey.

Heather - HAPPY DAY OF THE DEAD.
November 2nd, 2008
Today is the ‘Day of the Dead’ known in Voodoo as ‘Fet Gede’. It is the day to honour the dead and pay tribute to Baron Samedi who guards the crossroads. The cemetery is the best place to celebrate but if you can’t make it the dead will come back and talk to you wherever you are.
It’s the best day to send your requests to Baron Samedi. To contact him here is an example of a ritual that you could follow:
1. Wear purple or black.
2. Ring a bell or clap your hand to signal the start of the ritual.
3. Light a candle and focus on the flame (it symbolises the pathway between our world and the world where Baron Samedi lives.
4. Ask Papa Legba to open the gate between this world and the spiritual world.
5. In a loud voice call for Baron Samedi.
6. Pour 3 libations of chilli rum or gin onto the ground
7. Present offerings of unsalted peanuts, cigars and money.
8. Dance until you work up a sweat.
9. When you feel he is near ask for what you need.
10. Gaze at the flame and listen to what he has to say.
11. When you are finished blow out the candle and leave the room without looking back.

Alex - Samedi Night Vision
October 16th, 2008This is from the night vision Michael shot, we just got sent it. It’s from the Lafayette ceremony where we did a dancing and drumming ritual to please Samedi and help invoke his spirit.

Alex - Office Altar
October 10th, 2008As the Baron instructed we’ve made an altar to Samedi in our office. We conducted a ceremony with Amber, Suze and Justine from Frucor. No drums, no dancing but some candles, cigars, gin and positive vibes. A bit low key compared to what we’ve been doing the last week. I’m more than happy with that.

Alex - Doing what Samedi says
October 5th, 2008Today we acted upon Samedis first piece of creative direction. He told us to place an offering of a can of Samedi, a single red rose, a handkerchief and some rice at a particular crossroads in New Orleans. It was in the area where the levy broke during hurricane Katrina. 1600 people lost their lives here. Where once there was houses, now there are empty lots and weeds. There was an eerie silence as we stood there for a moment. Even the birds flew away.
Check out our lame-arse presenting skills.
Gamba our taxi driver wasn’t convinced by the whole thing though.

Heather - DANCING WITH THE BARON!
October 4th, 2008The Baron came out today – and he is certainly not the quiet type.
Three Haitian Priestesses performed a ceremony where 75year old Mama Lola channeled him. He decided that it would be better if I was covered in cans of Samedi and about half a bottle of Gin. He then made me dance for him.
It was a pretty intense ceremony with Mama Lola frothing at the mouth and talking in a throaty voice. The Baron told us that he loved the drink, told us what he’d like us to say in the ads, choose some pantone colours and typefaces.
We made him offerings of Samedi, gin, peanuts and lots of money so he seemed pretty happy.
